Bible Black is dedicated to Kevin A. Ross, the original author of “The Music of the Spheres” scenario. Ross is my favorite classic Call of Cthulhu writer, and I sometimes feel I’m walking in his footsteps—Ross’ vision of Kingsport was instrumental to White Leviathan.
I would be remiss if I didn’t offer a co-dedication to Carl Sagan, the person most responsible for interesting me in science at a young age. Like many scientists and science educators of my generation, Carl Sagan and Cosmos opened the door to a world of astonishing possibilities. Although I eventually became a chemist instead of an astronomer, I’ve maintained an active interest in astronomy, and have experienced the pleasure of teaching it on numerous occasions.
I would like to thank my fellow gamers who helped me develop and playtest Bible Black. There’s Kelly Ohanessian and Rob Stoll, veterans of the original Quiddity crew from many years ago, and Michael Cisco, whose vision of the Mi-Go in his Sol Invictus scenario set a high bar for the Outer Ones. Then there’s the newbies to Call of Cthulhu, all of whom acquitted themselves with admirable derangement: Rachael Brungard, Gabriel Mesa, Matt Lipson, and Alana Whitman. Additional thanks to Andrew Wasmuth, who couldn’t join the madness this time, but remained interested to hear how I was screwing over other players for a change. And much gratitude to Don Coatar and Michael Glavin for their steadfast encouragement!
Thanks to Sandy Petersen and Chaosium for creating the best RPG on the market. And of course, my endless gratitude to H.P. Lovecraft and Ramsey Campbell, two of the greatest horror writers of the twentieth century.
This scenario could not have been written without my constant musical companions: King Crimson, Rush, Robyn Hitchcock, Nurse With Wound, Lustmord, and every artist at Cryo Chamber.
A final word about the text itself. Bible Black is peppered with literary Easter eggs, tongue-in-cheek references to horror movies, allusions to prog rock, and Lovecraftian in-jokes, mostly residing in the names and personalities of its characters. The people I love and respect the most have been transformed into bullies, monsters, and madmen. If I have offended anybody living, dead, or otherwise, I apologize. Feel free to register your complaints with Cindy White at the McCaine County Courthouse.
