Description
Jenny Hooper is a petite Japanese-American woman with long black hair she keeps in a tangled bun. Although her usual demeanor is friendly and outgoing, she can fall into intense periods of reflection that some have described as “moody” and others as “just plain rude.” She speaks with a slight Brooklyn accent, and favors casual clothing that belies her family’s significant wealth.
History
Born Jumi Raygun Hooper in Brooklyn Heights, New York City, Jenny is the only child of a science “power couple.” Her father is Barrington “Barry” Hooper, a noted astronomer currently working at the South Pole Telescope (SPT) at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. Her mother is Yuki Watanabe, a CERN-based theoretical physicist who specializes in quantum chromodynamics, and is widely expected to earn a Nobel Prize. Additionally, Jenny’s aunt is Yuko Watanabe, a well-known electronic musician who’s recorded on John Zorn’s Tzadik label.
Jenny attended St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn, graduating at the age of 16 to immediately attend Columbia University and dual major in chemistry and physics. She also earned a minor in East Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese literature. From there she earned a Master’s degree in physics from MIT, specializing in astrophysics. After taking a “gap year” to travel through Europe and Japan, she returned to the states to decide her next course of study—theoretical astrophysics? Observational astronomy? Maybe even xenochemistry?
Deciding to “gain a little practical experience” before enrolling in a Ph.D. program, Jenny has been rotating through various “semesters” working in real-world research centers. She’s already spent three months at CERN with her mother and three months in Hawaii at the Keck Observatory. The Great Plains Cruciform Array is her latest “project,” where she’s working as an array operator under the guidance of Dr. Gerald Neal himself. (Neal knows her father through a long association that goes back to Williams and the Hopkins Observatory.) While operating the dishes is certainly less glamourous than astrophysics, Jenny wants to ground herself in the practical technology of radio telescopes before she pursues her doctorate. (Harvard is Jenny’s current first choice, but her mother is pushing for the University of Tokyo.)
Music
As if these achievements weren’t enough for a 25-year-old, Jenny Hooper is also an accomplished musician, and has written several papers about the intersection of physics and music theory. She’s composed several electronic works that combine fractal mathematics and aleatoric systems, and has lately become fascinated with the French spectral school. Jenny publishes her electronic music on Bandcamp under the moniker “Forty and Nine Serpents.” Jenny’s favorite musician is David Bowie, followed closely by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kate Bush, and Björk. Despite her interest in more esoteric music, Jenny considers herself a Swiftie, and has seen Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour on three different continents.
Sonifications
Jenny’s interests in music and astronomy unite in her sonification work. It began when she was studying infrared astronomy at Keck. Jenny used data from the Long Wavelength Spectrometer as material for a composition entitled Fomalhaut, converting IR frequencies to sound and applying an algorithm that transformed orbital data into rhythmic cells. Over time her sonifications became more complex and musical, and fostered her interest in radio astronomy—although Jenny would only admit this to her Aunt Yuko, it was the muse Euterpe that drove her to the GPCA more than Urania, and she began translating low-frequency data into sound and music within days of her arrival.
Personal Life
Jenny Hooper lives in the dormitory with her “best friend,” a Siamese cat named David Bowie. She devotes most of her time to studying, reading, and creating music—even before she came to the GPCA, Jenny only slept six hours a night; now she rarely sleeps more than four.
Researching Jenny
Jenny leads an active life on social media, and maintains a TikTok account where she posts all manner of excited, pro-science messages in exaggerated “anime girl” style. She runs an on-again/off-again blog about female Japanese writers, and frequently posts on numerous Internet forums, including a Saga comic fan site, a Björk bootlegging community, and something called the “Cat Canoe,” a dispersed community of cat “companions.”
Notable Possessions
Jenny drives a Honda scooter, and her dorm room is filled with hundreds of books; but she’s much less ostentations about her wealth than Jackie.
Reactions to Nemesis
Jenny began hearing the Fourth Stanza the night of 8 February 2025. The only other member of the Nemesis Team closer to Apostolus is Dr. Neal himself.
Nemesis Sonifications
Jenny’s first sonification of the Nemesis signal was little more than a direct transformation of the radio data into soundwaves. But even that recording proved to be strangely compelling, and within a few weeks she had developed the signal into an hypnotic soundscape. In January she re-arranged the Swezey-Minnich Observatory into a sound studio, and began playing her Nemesis Sonifications for the entire team. The experience proved to be transformative. It was universally decided that Jenny should continue refining and expanding her sonifications as the team further developed the Nemesis signal. For the last two months, the entire team assembles in the SMO every Thursday night to hear the latest iteration of Jenny’s work. The effect of hearing the Song of Ghroth as actual music has been profound, and has accelerated the mental and moral decay of the entire team, pushing them towards Imminence and Apostolus.
Jenny’s Delusion: The New Aeon
Among the Nemesis Team, only Neal has done more than Jenny to bring about the final “Chorus.” As a result, Jenny has become quietly deranged, fallen prey to an elaborate delusion she has yet to share with her colleagues. Always a casual fan of fringe religions, lately Jenny has been studying Gnosticism. As the Song surges in her brain, she’s begun conflating her fascination with Gnosticism with the Nemesis signal. For the time being, Jenny tolerates Neal’s insistence that Nemesis is a brown dwarf, and Mancini’s reflexive belief it’s an alien artifact. Only Jenny knows the truth—Nemesis is a god, something akin to a biblical angel or a Gnostic demiurge. And that god is coming to usher in a New Aeon. The corrupt “Old World” shall be swept away, and the surviving “Elect” shall be handed the reigns to something glorious and new. As her favorite musician once sang, “The sun machine is coming down, and we’re going to have a party…”
Episodes
Most of Jenny’s Ghroth-related episodes center around magnifying and expanding her core delusion. Occasionally she’s gripped by euphoria or paranoia, but never anything too confrontational. Jenny abhors guns and violence. At her most insane, Jenny believes that her Elected status will grant her godlike powers in the New Aeon. Maybe she’ll just turn her enemies into flowers or musical notes?
GPCA Relationships
Jenny enjoys working at the GPCA, but has become disappointed by Neal’s “lack of vision” and disturbed by his increasing severity. Why can’t the Director understand that what’s coming is beautiful? Isn’t he one of the Elect? He should be more happy, more joyous! Jenny has a somewhat frosty relationship with Diane Mancini, whom she thinks is jealous of her youth and intelligence; but she gets along fine with Harlan Bennett, even though he’s obviously confused about the glorious event they’re calling into being. On the other hand, Jenny has much affection for C.T. Guest, and the Assistant Director has become something of a father figure.
Jenny remains aloof from the other operators, whom she correctly sees as limited in their intelligence and potential. She barely thinks about Freddie Pike, Mason Dauterive, and Jay Osman; and while she’d love to “barely think” about Jackie Bernard-Wu, his “vibes” are becoming increasingly more creepy. Jenny has a decent relationship with many of the mechanics and techs in the field. She takes an active interest in the telescopes themselves, and often spends free time exploring the Workshop.
The Role of Jenny Hooper
Jenny Hooper is a complicated character. On one hand, she truly believes she’s bringing about a New Aeon, and seems blind to the negative consequences of her actions. On the other hand, she’s a genuinely kind person, and if she weren’t under the influence of Ghroth, she’s be horrified at what she’s becoming. Convincing Jenny to help the player characters is no easy task, and directing her away from Apostolus must oppose a Ghroth Power of 80. However, if the player characters can bring Jenny to their side, she proves an intelligent and resourceful ally—although Jenny cannot be convinced to harm herself or other humans. Now, figuring out how a Mi-Go brain cylinder works, that’s another matter…
If Jenny is alienated and turns against the player characters, she’s more likely to go to Neal for help than take drastic actions herself. And despite her previous dislike of Mason, if he becomes convinced that Nemesis is an Elder God, Jenny may find an unexpected ally in bringing about the New Aeon!
Notes and Inspirations
If Bible Black were a movie, Jenny would be played by Shioli Kutsuna, whose portrayal of the character Mitsuki Yamato in Apple TV’s Invasion was the inspiration for Bible Black’s version of Jenny Hooper. (Jenny’s cat David Bowie is a tribute to this wonderful character, a bright spot in an otherwise dull series.) Jenny’s aunt is loosely based on the musician Ikue Mori.
