I’m curious, having read both pieces, how the details of Pynchon’s early life–he lived in Glen Cove, NY. While at Cornell, his “best friend” was Richard Farina–they went to Cuba together. Pynchon dedicated Gravity’s Rainbow to Farina. I’m inclined to think Siegal made up most of what he wrote–after all, there was no way to fact-check it with Pynchon, so it was safe to just shoot the proverbial breeze.
