The Cast
This “cast sheet” contains descriptions of Bible Black’s player characters. Players should work with the Keeper to select a character that best suits their interests and roleplaying style. These are public descriptions; once a character has been assigned, the player will receive a detailed character sheet.
Required Player Characters
The following four player characters are integral to the plot of Bible Black.
Nick Castro (Paranormal Journalist)
American, 44. Birthplace: Queens, New York City, 1981.
Nick Castro is a journalist who writes for the Fortean Times and maintains a Substack devoted to the paranormal. Something of a loner, he’s a firm believer in UAPs and alien contact, but retains a skeptical side that separates him from the likes of UFO cultists and ghost-hunters. He’s been privately invited to the Great Plains Cruciform Array by “Crow Woman 18,” a GPCA employee who claims she’s discovered proof of alien contact.
Player Notes
Castro is a traditional Call of Cthulhu investigator who pokes his nose into places it doesn’t belong. Castro’s player should enjoy taking risks and snooping around in potentially dangerous places. It’s helpful if his player brushes up on modern ufology.
Cal Mortenson (McCaine County Deputy)
American, Age 40. Birthplace: Ham Lake, Minnesota 1985.
There are only three law-enforcement officials in McCaine County: Sheriff Randy Kaufman, Deputy Bobby Horner, and Cal Mortenson, the junior deputy. A thoughtful man with the physique of a middleweight, Deputy Cal has mild autism, which makes him somewhat more blunt than his peers. Still, he’s done his best to integrate into the local community, and he’s a proud member of Seneca Church. Cal enjoys the simple things in life: hunting, fishing, working out, playing Fallout: New Vegas, and listening to his collection of vintage techno. Inclined to follow the letter of the law, Cal relies on Sheriff Kaufman to advise him on the more…difficult aspects of human relations.
Player Notes
Deputy Cal lives in Hayden, and has experience with both the locals and the scientists at “the Dish.” He should be played by someone comfortable with exercising legal authority, but also capable of working independently—there’s only three officers in the entire county! Deputy Cal starts the game on the outside of the other player characters, so his player should welcome being something of a “lone wolf.”
Dr. Rose P. Rines (Psychologist)
American, 30. Birthplace: Santiago, California 1995.
A young psychologist with a complicated history, Dr. Rines has become obsessed with UFO-related phenomena, especially abduction experiences. She has selected Hayden as the location for a postdoc research project, setting up shop in a small apartment at Red Cloud Auto and interviewing subjects about possible alien contact. Cagey and somewhat fragile, Dr. Rines seems to be looking for something, and her interviews can get rather personal.
Player Notes
Dr. Rines is a modern twist on the Lovecraftian academic, a kind of Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee meets Fox Mulder. She is a character with many secrets, some unknown even to herself, and is designed for players who enjoy the more arcane aspects of Call of Cthulhu. Rines is a very complex character, and should be selected by a player looking for a roleplaying challenge.
Dr. William Snow (Visiting Astrophysicist)
American, Age 56. Birthplace: Hiramsburg, Ohio 1969.
A tenured professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Dr. Snow is an astrophysicist loosely affiliated with the Great Plains Cruciform Array. Every few years Snow and a couple of graduate students spent a week at the GPCA, a kind of educational retreat that offers him a chance to serve as principle investigator for his own astronomical studies. He’s about to head to the GPCA for another visit, but he’s a bit nervous. Snow hasn’t been there since 2019—blame COVID!—and he’s been catching some strangely unfriendly vibes from Director Neal. What’s going on? Hopefully it wasn’t something he did last time he was there! A heavy drinker with three divorces under his belt, Snow vaguely recalls getting black-out drunk at the farewell dinner. Is Neal still pissed about that?
Player Notes
Dr. Snow is a classic Lovecraftian archetype—the doomed academic. He’s a character with many secrets, some unknown even to himself, and is designed for players who enjoy the more arcane aspects of Call of Cthulhu. Snow is a scientist, so his player should feel comfortable brushing up on the basics of radio astronomy. Snow will be spending a lot of time at the GPCA, and has two nights of “pointing time” scheduled to study rogue black holes.
Additional Player Characters
The following characters are not required to run the scenario.
Grad Student
This character should be a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, preferably a PhD student in astronomy, physics, mathematics, or computer science. The player is free to design any suitable character, but they must be attached to Dr. Snow for his Spring visit to the GPCA. It might be useful to have the Grad Student interested in other scenario-related phenomena like UFOs, alien abductions, or SETI-related science. Other interests include science fiction, music, Tarot cards, conspiracy theories, and birdwatching.
The Local
This character is a local, possibly someone who works at one of the provided Hayden locations. The Local may also be an outlaw, a rancher, or might be employed by the GPCA in some supporting role—maybe a track mechanic, a cryo technician, or even a janitor. The Local should be friends with Stanley Arnold and Carrie Osbourne, and should have a basic understanding of McCaine County and its key locations. The Local may possess any number of useful interests—driving trucks, riding motorcycles, shooting guns, locksmithing, crop-dusting; or maybe military, agricultural, piloting, or medical skills.
