Here you’ll find a list of Pynchon’s published fiction, along with brief commentaries on each work. The books are listed in chronological order, with the first US edition depicted above the most current US edition. Clicking a cover image takes you to Amazon. Short Stories — Pynchon’s short stories, mostly collected in Slow Learner. This page also includes the uncollected story, “Mortality and Mercy in Vienna.”
V. — (1963) Pynchon’s first novel is about the elusive quest for V. And also, the Whole Sick Crew.
The Crying of Lot 49 – (1965) Pynchon’s shortest novel is about a conspiracy and a rare postage stamp.
Gravity’s Rainbow – (1973) Pynchon’s masterpiece, this novel unfolds in the aftermath of World War II. There’s also a light bulb named Byron.
Vineland — (1990) This novel of disillusionment is set in a mythical California.
Mason & Dixon — (1997) Pynchon’s tale of the Enlightenment, Cartography, and Sandwiches.
Against the Day — (2006) Part western, part steampunk, part mystical travelogue, this sprawling epic is about the birth of Modernity.
Inherent Vice — (2009) Pynchon returns to the West Coast for a comedy of errors set amidst the ruin of the Sixties.
Bleeding Edge — (2013) Set on the eve of 911, this wicked satire explodes the Zeitgeist of the late 1990s.
