These PDF handouts are designed for the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign, written by Charles and Janyce Engan and published in 1999 by Chaosium. My favorite Call of Cthulhu scenario, I ran this epic campaign from 2007-2008. Based on materials found in the adventure book, these handouts are a bit easier to manipulate, and have spiffy typewritten fonts. I have made notes on some of my alterations and additions. More detailed explanations may be found in Beyond the Mountains of Madness: Campaign Notes.
Handouts
Dyer Report (Edited, “Published” Version)
When I ran this campaign, I did not want the bulk of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness to be a “known quantity” for the player characters. I therefore created an “edited” Dyer Report, with all the Mythos elements removed. This document represents the commonly-accessible “published” version of the Dyer Report. Professionally typeset with no signs of redactions or alterations, the players would have no knowledge the report was heavily edited. I made this “published” report required reading after the first gaming session.
Dyer Report (Redacted, “Private” Version)
This is the original typed Dyer Report with all Mythos elements “redacted,” or covered by black bars. Players were able to obtain this document through the Miskatonic University Library. While having access to the redacted report doesn’t expose Mythos elements, it reveals that the “published” version was heavily edited! What were they trying to hide?
Dyer Report (Complete, “Original” Version)
Available later in the campaign—after the horrors began to reveal themselves! This is the full, unredacted text of the Dyer Report. Obviously, it’s drawn from the Lovecraft novella.
Dyer-Lake Expedition Personnel
This roster reveals the names and fates of the infamous Dyer-Lake Expedition of 1930, as described by H.P. Lovecraft in At the Mountains of Madness. This expedition forms the background of the scenario. My list differs slightly from the published campaign, for reasons described in the Campaign Notes.
Starkweather-Moore Expedition Personnel
This PDF roster shows the names and occupations of the SME, and is intended as an easy-reference sheet or handout for players. This PDF retains the published characters, but makes a couple of changes. I added “Simon Meeker” as expedition photographer, and enrolled “Liz MacReady” as a third pilot—two pilots seemed a bit shortsighted to me. I offer these suggestions as a way to broaden the expedition palette.
S.S. Gabrielle Crew Roster
This PDF roster of the Gabrielle’s “expanded” crew is intended as an easy-reference sheet or handout for players. Seeing as the players spend a good deal of time on the S.S. Gabrielle, I wanted a more “lived-in” feel, and added a few extra sailors and pets, and organized the crew into watches.
Sailor Rosters from the Arkham & Miskatonic, and Recent Crew Additions to the Gabrielle
In my campaign, there were additional sinister forces at work onboard the Gabrielle, in the form of a particular sailor who had signed aboard. This sailor was originally part of the Dyer-Lake Expedition, and represented a cult that welcomed the coming apocalypse. My players had to figure out the culprit by investigating crew rosters.
Gabrielle Classes
This PDF enhances and expands “The Benefits of Education” table on page 78 of the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign book. It includes a variation of the rules as well as a few additional classes.
The Warning Letters
These letters replicate “Beyond Papers 1.4” on page 36 and “Beyond Papers 2.4” on page 44 of the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign book. They are included as easy-to-print-out PDFs, typed in a similar typeface used in Letter 2.4.
Newspaper Article About Douglas’ Murder
This article replaces “Beyond Papers 2.1” on page 38 of the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign book. It is included as easy-to-print-out PDF. Because my campaign held a different fate for Captain J.B. Douglas, I needed a different article.
Douglas’ Unfinished Letter to Philip
This letter replicates “Beyond Papers 2.3” on page 42 of the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign book. It is included as easy-to-print-out PDF.
The Wallaroo Letter
This PDF is a more creepy variation of “Beyond Papers 6.1” on page 108 of the Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign book. It better reflects the fate of the whaler as described in my Wallaroo Expansion.
