Joycean Communities
The following are Joycean communities, ranging from professional organizations to public reading groups. Bloomsday groups are not included on this page, as there’s too many of them to count, most are bound to specific geographic locations. If anyone knows of any active group that should be added to this list please drop us a line!
Professional Organizations
The following organizations are generally only open to academics or other professionals.
James Joyce Centre
Located in a restored Georgian townhouse in Dublin, the James Joyce Centre is dedicated to “promoting an interest in his life and works,” and contains members of the Joyce family on its board.
International James Joyce Foundation Homepage
Now located at the University of Tulsa, the IJJF was founded on Bloomsday 1967.
Zürich James Joyce Foundation
Founded in 1985, the Zürich James Joyce Foundation “promotes research, interaction and a lively exchange of ideas. It hopes to stimulate new readers and emphasizes Joyce’s relevance as a fascinating, human, appealing and comic writer.”
Antwerp James Joyce Centre
Founded in 1991, the AJJC focuses on “the genetic study of Finnegans Wake and its notebooks.”
UCD James Joyce Research Centre
Founded in 2006 at the University College Dublin, the James Joyce Research Centre was established “to promote research on the work of James Joyce. It offers MA and PhD degrees in Joyce Studies and also runs a programme of activities devoted to advancing international academic exchange and public debate about the many facets of Joyce’s legacy.”

The following organizations are open to all interested Joyceans.
James Joyce Society
Founded in 1947, the James Joyce Society used to meet in New York City’s famous Gotham Book Mart. It’s one of the oldest James Joyce societies in existence!
Online Communities & Reading Groups
The following groups are primarily online, and meet over email, chat, or Zoom.
James Joyce Reddit
With 3900 members, the James Joyce Reddit is conducting a Finnegans Wake reading throughout 2023.
James Joyce Society Facebook Page
The Facebook page for New York’s James Joyce Society is open to all subscribers.
JoyceGroup Santa Fe
Founded in 1994, this group is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but its online meetings include members from all over the world. “Over the years, JoyceGroup Santa Fe has made its way through all of Joyce’s major works at least twice, except Finnegans Wake of course, which we started reading about 20 years ago, and are about two-thirds of the way through. Presently we’re spending the first couple of hours with Dubliners and then top it off at noon with an hour-or-so of Finnegan.”
Ulysses Facebook Page
This page has over 4800 members, and is devoted to discussing Ulysses.
Finnegans Wake Society of New York
Founded in 1991 and known as the “Wake Watchers,” this society is devoted to the reading and explication of Finnegans Wake. They meet by Zoom every month.
Finnegans Wake Reading Group (Modernist Studies Ireland)
“Since its inaugural meeting in July 2020, Modernist Studies Ireland’s Finnegans Wake Reading Group has brought together readers from around the globe to participate in an ongoing reading and discussion of Joyce’s most recalcitrant but rewarding text. Why not join in? No homework or previous Wake experience is required! Run by Casey Lawrence (Trinity College Dublin) and Tiana Fischer (NUI Galway), the group continues strong. Our fortnightly meetings are free and open to all: we meet via Zoom for two hours every second Tuesday from 4-6 pm Irish Standard Time (GMT)! Join us for “Lots of Fun at Finnegans Wake!”
Melbourne Finnegans Wake Reading Group
A private Facebook group open to members living in Melbourne, this group meets monthly on Zoom. “Lots of fun with Finnegans Wake. Founded by members of Bloomsday In Melbourne in October 2017. Wipe your glosses with what you know!”
Journals
James Joyce Quarterly
Published by the International James Joyce Society, “each issue of the JJQ provides a selection of peer-reviewed essays representing the very best in contemporary Joyce scholarship. In addition, the journal publishes notes, reviews, letters, a comprehensive checklist of recent Joyce-related publications.”
Genetic Joyce Studies
Based in Antwerp and published annually, Genetic Joyce Studies is “an electronic journal for the study of James Joyce’s Works in Progress.”
Hypermedia Joyce Studies
Running from 1994 to 2015, HJS was “a refereed electronic journal of James Joyce scholarship.”
