42) Pilot Island
East of Jersey Reef
A) Pilot Island
The waters around Kingsport can be treacherous. Large ships traversing Jersey Reef are required to employ a pilot, an experienced sailor who boards the ship and guides it through the harbor. Incoming merchant ships also take on a customs inspector, but that’s not required for whalers. Pilot Island is located just past Jersey Reef, and boasts a wharf, a signal light, and a wooden cottage sheltering on-duty pilots and custom inspectors.
B) The Death of Andrew Orne
Kingsport’s pilots are a tight-knit community, and their brotherhood has been rocked by the suicide of Andrew Orne, the pilot who guided the Quiddity into the harbor this August. A candle burns in his honor in the pilot house, and his friend Archibald Mercer has been collecting donations for Orne’s widow. For obvious reasons, Kingsport’s pilots distrust the Quiddity, and are among the most vocal in pronouncing it a “cursed” ship.
