Pynchon Music: Benny Profane
Party Out of Bounds
Benny Profane (1985–1990)
Hard rockers Benny Profane lived up to the billing of their Pynchonian namesake during the late 1980’s, working out of the Beatles-graveyard now known as Liverpool. They relased five works: Devil Laughing, a 12″ disk on the obscure Ediesta Records label; Dumb Luck Charm, on Imaginary Records; the 12″ Where Is Pig? on Pure 1 records (1986), no doubt alluding to Pynchon’s perennially debauched character Pig Bodine, whose ancestor even appears in Mason & Dixon as “fender-belly Bodine”!!; Skateboard to Oblivion, another 12″ on Play Hard Records (1989); and Trapdoor Swing, Play Hard Records (1989). The line-up of musicians was as follows: Peter Barker, organ; Dave Brown, drums and tambourine until 1988; Dave Jackson, vocals; Joseph McKechnie, guitar; Robin Surtees, guitar; Becky Stringer, bass; Roger Sinek, drums until 1989; Liam Rice, drums, 1990.
