Roper Revolving Rifle inset. Note the arm attaching the hammer to the bolt. The shooter had to pull the hammer back — but not cock it! — in order to expose the chamber and load a steel cartridge. Cocking the hammer rotated the cartridge. This is actually a Roper shotgun. Photograph from Rock Island Auction Company.
