Milton Wellingborough Redburn
O Nature, and O soul of man! How far beyond all utterance are your linked analogies! Not the smallest atom stirs or lives in matter, but has its cunning duplicate in mind.
—Herman Melville, “Moby-Dick,” Chapter 70
Character Profile: Milton Redburn
Redburn is the “straight man” of White Leviathan. He has few secrets, no occult background, and no hidden agenda. Although he’s loosely based on Herman Melville, Redburn is a blank slate, and is intended for a player who enjoys the freedom of being a wild card.
Call of Dagon
Redburn begins the campaign suffering from Stage 1 Call of Dagon. The player should not know this. If Redburn loses too much Sanity during the first few chapters, the Keeper may advance him to Stage 2 by the time the Quiddity departs the Galápagos Islands. Redburn’s lapses into madness may take the form of delusions of grandeur, and it’s possible he may become as obsessed with writing White Leviathan as Joab’s obsessed with killing it! A truly deranged Redburn may start treating everyone as fictional characters.
Endgame: Redburn Faces the Apocalypse
Given his personality, Redburn is likely to work against the Covenant and attempt to thwart the resurrection of Dagon. Redburn is intelligent enough to know that no one can be entrusted with the power of the Supplicant; and though the world is a terrible and unjust place, it’s up to humans to change things, and not some supernatural force imposed by an egomaniacal sorcerer. If Redburn goes insane, this philosophy may go by the board. Who better to rewrite the world than its greatest living author?
