Prospect Hill
Kingsport’s newest development, Prospect Hill reflects the town’s industrial designs inland, and is the neighborhood closest the Farnsworth Paint Factory and the Spencer Glue Works. While not yet the “dark Satanic mill” it’s destined to become after the Civil War, the area is still considered the least desirable neighborhood in Kingsport, with middle-class residences in the north giving way to lower-class homes towards the southern manufactory district. Prospect Hill also holds the bulk of Kingsport’s immigrants from Catholic countries, particularly Portuguese, Italians, Spanish, and Irish. A walk to the end of Caldecott Street reveals the construction of a large brick building intended to provide cheap housing for Kingsport’s poorer families. Kingsport’s Selectmen point to this “tenement” building as a shining beacon for the future, proof that even the poor are properly housed and cared for in this city of Tuttles and Illsleys.
