Downtown
The crowded Downtown region is the city’s main business district, and its few remaining residences are generally located above storefronts. The neighborhood features a significant amount of new construction, with eighteenth-century buildings constantly renovated or razed to pave the way for modernity. Despite this, its cobblestone roads remain quite colonial. They are notoriously twisting and narrow, and most are restricted to foot traffic. Kingsport’s first neighborhood to be equipped with gas lighting, many Downtown streets boast brand-new streetlamps adorned with fish, dolphins, whales, and octopuses. Although some residents originally feared this innovation, it’s proved quite popular, and the Kingsport Streetlighting Commission is currently extending the system into the adjacent areas of Central Hill, West Side, and South Shore.
