The Wharves
The area of Harborside lining the waterfront is commonly known as the Wharves. As one might expect, it’s a jigsaw puzzle of docks, piers, and slips, with the streets behind the docks fronting maritime merchants and public houses. The most famous of these is the Three Haddocks on Water Street, built in colonial times and advertised as the oldest tavern in Kingsport. There’s also the Spiked Gun, a saloon that caters to African Americans, and the Golden Eagle Dance Hall, Kingsport’s most recent establishment designed to part sailors with their money. Another popular location is Water Street Signs, a sign-painting shop owned by “Jolly” Craig Cooley, who does a brisk tattooing business on the second floor.
