New Zealand Forest Rangers.
The illustration on the left is by Raffaele Ruggeri, and was borrowed from Osprey’s The New Zealand Wars 1820–72 by Ian Knight. The photograph on the right shows a scout. Both men carry the Calisher & Terry carbine; although the fellow on the left seems to have been surprised while loading his! (In order to conserve space, I clipped out the Māori warrior about to cleave his skull with an axe.)
